About our Cubs Section

The Cub Scout section is for boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 10½. The Cub programme is packed with fun and adventure, and is designed to present every young person with new challenges, work with other people, explore the world around them and develop personal skills and ultimately prepare them for when they become a Scout.

Each Cub will gain many of the 7 ‘challenge’ and 33 ‘activity’ badges that are available, during their time in the pack and many succeed in achieving their Chief Scout Silver Award by the time they are ready to move on to Scouts. Cubs are very involved in shaping and designing the programme they would like to take part in.

We meet weekly in term time on Tuesdays 6.00 to 7.15pm. Our Pack has a Cub Scout Leader called Akela and assistant leaders called Raksha, Hathi and Baloo. We have a parent rota of parent helpers too. The pack is split into smaller packs called sixes; with each six lead by a cub who is a Sixer and supported by another cub, who is the Seconder. Sixers and Seconders are Cubs who look after and lead a small team.  At the start of each meeting we have a special way of saying hello called ‘The Grand Howl’ with the Sixers and Seconders, leading part of this special ceremony and flag break.

We usually meet in the Scout Hut, but we do like to get out and about both into the village and to the local towns. We have visited the local fire station to learn about fire safety; a local farm to see how the farm to fork programme works, and to the local university observatory for star gazing. We have had visits from interesting people, including the local mountain rescue, to learn about their important work. We also go out for badge work into the local countryside to learn and practice our new skills.

As well as our weekly meetings, we take part in all sorts of activities at weekends. Cubs get the chance to go on all sorts of outings including day trips and longer trips including camping for a full weekend, sometimes on our own and sometimes with other Cub packs, sometimes indoors and sometimes outdoors. We take part in District day activities including water day, sailing on the Marine Lake in Southport in the summer.

Cubs take part in District and county competitions where you get the chance to try out some of the skills you might have learnt as a Cub or at home or school. Recent competitions have included chess, swimming, football and much more!

We take part in national, district and village events including Remembrance Day, St George’s Day Parade, Village Walking Day and the village scarecrow competition. For the Scout Group we take part in fund raising activities including sponsored walks and bag packing in the local supermarket
